Save your money, your time, your environment, and your fragile emotional state and build (don't buy) a natural, foundationless, frameless, low-intervention, practically "touchless" honeybee hive! There is so much more information and resources on the web now for the Warré hive than there was when I first started researching keeping bees and I wondered why. Then I learned that Emile Warré's Beekeeping for All was translated into English in 2007.

I built two of these hives this weekend from 2x8 lumber (using the internal dimensions of the Thür hive, 28 x 28 x 14 cm. A 2x8 is 3.8 thick by 13.7 cm wide - close enough to 14 cm to be serviceable) for right around $50 a piece. I modified the roof and added a quilt to each, as well, I modfied the base so that I have a simple drawer located at the rear of the hive for placing sticky boards and to act as a solid floor in the winter. Otherwise the floor is a simple framed screen fashioned out of a piece of needle craft mesh. It took a leisurely afternoon's work with a mitre saw and access to a few pieces of scrap lumber. Bar the modifications, this was cheaper, easier and quicker than assembling pre-cut lang supers.
